The 45th annual Northeast Regional Conference on the Social Studies (NERC) will be held from Monday, April 7 through Wednesday, April 9, 2014 in Sturbridge, Massachusetts. The theme for NERC 2014 is “Social Studies in the Balance.” The focus is to investigate “how social studies teachers and administrators can balance several educational priorities, including the Common Core State Standards, and yet maintain the importance and value of a rich and rigorous social studies education for all students.” A main goal of the 2014 conference is to “affirm social studies as a major academic content area that is equal to English language arts, mathematics, and science, engineering and technology.” The workshops and sessions offered at NERC 2014 will help provide much-needed support and resources for social studies teachers to continue to provide meaningful and effective learning opportunities for all learners.
This year, NERC will also host the New England Social Studies Teacher Placement Job Fair on Wednesday, April 9, 2014 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The job fair is open to graduating students majoring in history and social studies education from colleges and universities. Representatives from public school districts and private schools with anticipated history and social studies teaching vacancies for the 2014-2015 school year will be present. Prospective candidates can also meet with current and retired social studies directors and supervisors who will share their expertise and advice on how to write an attention-grabbing cover letter and resume and prepare for a job interview. The admission fee for the New England Social Studies Teacher Placement Job Fair will be $25 for undergraduate students and will include full access to all NERC workshops and events.
